Fundação Maio Biodiversidade (FMB) is an environmental non-governmental and non-profit organisation created in 2010, located in the City of Porto Inglês, Maio Island in Cabo Verde. The foundation has the status of a public interest body and recently received an honourable mention from the President of the Republic of Cabo Verde. We are committed to sustainable development and collaborate closely with both local authorities and the population of Maio. With the technical and financial support of a range of national and international partners, our work focuses on the following key objectives:
i) the conservation, enhancement and responsible management of natural resources and biodiversity, particularly in protected areas,
ii) the promotion of sustainable development, respecting the historical and cultural heritage of the island of Maio, and
iii) the promotion of economic alternatives (e.g. Homestay program offering lodging with local families, Turtle conservation program) that guarantee respect for the environment and benefit the most deprived communities and the most vulnerable groups, with a particular focus on women and young people.
Over the last 15 years, FMB has become a national and international reference in terms of implementing conservation policies based on biodiversity conservation as the only way to promote livelihoods. At the international level, we have established strong partnerships with different donors and organisations and regularly cooperate with a group of West African NGOs and institutions working for the conservation and protection of marine ecosystems. At the national level, we have developed cooperation with different national NGOs and are part of the TAOLA+ conservation platform, which was officially recognised by the Cabo Verdean Government at the end of 2022. FMB has developed a set of protection, monitoring, education, awareness and sustainable development activities through projects developed by four programmes:
These are supported by a scientific advisor, and communication and volunteering departments which work across all core programmes.
