MSCA PF 2025 UMU Hosting Offer in Analysis and generation of open data on Marine Governance and Spatial Management of Marine Protected Areas (MPAs)
Universidad de Murcia
This Marie Curie fellowship project will involve collaboration among several research groups, namely Productive Systems, Cooperation and Development (María Semitiel García, Pedro Noguera Méndez); Marine Ecology and Conservation (José Antonio García Charton); Mathematical Modelling for Economics (Lourdes Molera Peris) and Applied Mathematics in Science and Engineering (Gema María Díaz Toca).
This multidisciplinary interaction is foundational, as researchers from these groups are presently engaged in a joint project, which this fellowship will be embedded in. The hosting environment spans several faculties (Biology, Computer Science, and Economics), each providing facilities and resources that are essential to the project’s objectives. These include access to specialized laboratories, advanced computing infrastructure, and digital and physical libraries. Additionally, collaborative spaces will allow the candidate to work closely with experts from diverse disciplines, fostering an enriching exchange of ideas and methodologies. Mentorship and support will be robust and varied, reflecting the interdisciplinary nature of the project.
The candidate will benefit from tailored guidance from leading scholars in the relevant fields, ensuring comprehensive professional development. Overall, our interdisciplinary group offers a dynamic and supportive environment, promising significant contributions to the candidate’s academic and professional growth.
The research project we are engaged in is focused on data management, spatial analysis, and governance of socio-ecological systems in marine-coastal environments. The specific focus of the fellow’s work will be flexible and tailored to their skills, interests, and background. Our research environment allows for a wide range of contributions—from spatial data analysis or digital tool development to policy-oriented reporting and social science perspectives. We welcome diverse profiles and encourage applicants to propose their own approach within the broader scope of the project.
The research team offers the opportunity to engage in secondments with groups from other countries. Leveraging its multidisciplinary approach, the research team has developed a platform on Spain's Marine Protected Areas (MPA), featuring comprehensive cartographic information for all marine and coastal MPA in the country for the first time. Additionally, a tool has been created, utilizing various methodologies, to assess governance (Observatory of Marine Governance) and community science data are being virtually collected and integrated.
Our team provides the candidate with access to our expertise in fieldwork for primary data collection, GIS, environmental governance, algorithm design for spatial analysis, programming, and other areas, allowing for flexibility in the candidate’s profile to align with our areas of expertise. This not only ensures collaboration within a multidisciplinary group, highly valued in the application, but also offers ample opportunities for professional development and enriches the candidate's resume. Furthermore, we are committed to publication, open data management, and the transfer of our research to society considering that we already have a comprehensive and up-to-date database of all marine and coastal-marine protected areas in Spain, including geospatial and legal information. This serves as a solid starting point for further analysis, data integration, and policy-relevant outputs.
Our research fields are aligned with the research objectives of Cluster 6 "Food, Bioeconomy, Natural Resources, Agriculture and Environment" and the "EU Mission: Restoring our oceans and waters" of the Horizon Europe programme.
