Job Description

Job title

PhD Researcher - AI-assisted Image Analysis for Aquaculture

Company

Scottish Association for Marine Science (SAMS)

Description of the job

This PhD opportunity focuses on developing and optimizing AI-based analysis of image data as applied to aquaculture. The research will involve developing practical boat-based data acquisition skills using remotely operated vehicles (ROVs) and creating algorithms based on deep learning for image analysis. The PhD will cover four key areas, including the development of standard operating procedures, colour correction methods, machine learning for marine feature identification, and an assessment of regulatory implications.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop data acquisition methods using ROVs for collecting environmental data in marine settings.
  • Build, apply, and evaluate algorithms based on deep learning for marine image analysis.
  • Develop and optimize standard operating procedures for consistent data capture.
  • Develop and evaluate colour correction methods to enhance image quality.
  • Create machines for identifying marine features and evaluating their status based on colour and rugosity.
  • Assess the regulatory implications of transitioning to machine-based image interpretation.
  • Collaborate with industry partners and regulatory bodies such as MOWI, Scottish Sea Farms, SEPA, and NatureScot.
  • Publish research findings in leading academic journals.

Requirements

  • Master’s degree or equivalent in biology, ecology, data science, or a related field.
  • Aptitude for programming, with experience in deep learning and AI-based image analysis preferred.
  • Interest in marine science and ecology, particularly in sustainable aquaculture practices.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of an interdisciplinary team.
  • Experience or interest in marine fieldwork and working with ROVs.
  • Commitment to publishing in high-impact academic journals.

Location

Oban, Scotland, with fieldwork in Shetland and other parts of Scotland
