Mālama Maunalua seeks a dynamic and community-focused Fisheries Management Area (FMA) Coordinator to lead the launch and ongoing management of the Maunalua Bay Fisheries Management Area and Makai Watch. This full-time position will coordinate adaptive fisheries governance, community-led ecological monitoring, and education efforts.

The FMA Coordinator will serve as the liaison connecting the Advisory Panel, Makai Watch program, community monitoring efforts, and habitat restoration initiatives. This role combines fisheries management, community engagement, and ecological restoration to support sustainable marine resource management in Maunalua Bay.

The successful candidate will manage multi-stakeholder processes, develop fisher networks, integrate traditional ecological knowledge into management decisions, and coordinate between state agencies and community initiatives. This permanent, full-time position offers opportunities to shape innovative community-based fisheries management approaches.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Organize and facilitate the FMA Advisory Panel composed of fishers, community members, scientists, and agency partners.
  • Coordinate meeting logistics, prepare agendas, and maintain meeting records.
  • Relaunch and oversee the Makai Watch program.
  • Recruit, train, and manage community volunteers for outreach and education.
  • Develop targeted outreach materials for diverse fishing communities including shoreline, commercial, and recreational sectors.
  • Build and maintain a network of local fishers across different sectors and fishing methods.
  • Facilitate regular communication between fisher communities and the FMA management structure.
  • Create pathways for traditional ecological knowledge to inform FMA operations.
  • Collaborate with fishers to incorporate their knowledge into habitat restoration efforts.
  • Coordinate between FMA objectives and ongoing restoration projects.
  • Maintain active partnerships with DLNR and other key stakeholders.
  • Represent Mālama Maunalua and the FMA at relevant meetings and forums.
  • Support knowledge transfer to other communities developing similar initiatives.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in fisheries management, ecology, Hawaiian studies, or similar degree required; Master's degree preferred.
  • Demonstrated experience in project management and coordination.
  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills with ability to work effectively with diverse community groups.
  • Experience facilitating meetings and managing multi-stakeholder processes.
  • Cultural sensitivity and understanding of local values and practices.
  • Ability to work independently while maintaining collaborative relationships.
  • Experience in natural resource management, marine conservation, or environmental education preferred.
  • Knowledge of Hawaiian fishing practices and marine ecosystems preferred.
  • Previous experience with community organizing or volunteer coordination preferred.
  • Familiarity with adaptive management principles preferred.
  • Background in facilitation, consensus-building, or conflict resolution preferred.
  • Connections within Hawaii's fishing or marine conservation communities preferred.
