Description of the job
The Sharjah Marine Science Research Center seeks a postdoctoral researcher to support the newly formed Khorfakkan Marine Observatory (KMO). This role will support the collection, analysis and publication of observational data collected from the Khorfakkan Marine Observatory.
The Khorfakkan Marine Observatory will become an integrated, multiparameter description of the physical, chemical and biological structure and function of the coastal marine environment situated off Khorfakkan, Sharjah, UAE. The role will integrate traditional sampling techniques with new autonomous methods, to underpin an efficient and comprehensive observing capability and programme.
The role will require seagoing and lab-based work to deliver physical, chemical and biological time series data. This role will be instrumental in helping to deliver the SMSRC and UKF mission to become a center of excellence for marine observation and delivering Research Impact from marine science.
Key Accountabilities:
- In-situ sampling and data collection: Co-ordinate and deliver the regular sampling activities at the KMO. Support the collection of underway data collection from ship-based and autonomous platforms. Ensure deployed and in-situ sampling equipment are serviced and calibrated to maintain quality and reliability. Advise on future investment (equipment, staff and training) to increase sampling capability.
- Laboratory-based sample analysis: Perform sample analysis in the laboratory, following agreed protocols to ensure analytical quality and consistency. Follow good laboratory practice at all times. Ensure analytical equipment are serviced and calibrated to maintain quality and reliability. Advise on future investment (equipment, staff and training) to increase sampling capability.
- Data management (data assurance, storage and utilization): Ensure all data are managed following recognized data management processes and standards. Support the creation of data management and visualization tools.
- Innovation and Autonomy: Promote and deliver methods that increase the use of digitization and autonomy into the sample collection, analysis and data generation activities of the KMO.
- International Reputation and Engagement: Represent the SMSRC at international meetings and conferences to increase the use of KMO data and infrastructure. Engage with SMSRC Communications staff to increase visibility and awareness of the KMO. Support visits and delegations to the SMSRC to increase visibility, reputation and activity.
- Training and capability development: Train staff and students in the practice of marine observations and time-series. Support students and visitors conducting projects involving the KMO.

Requirements
Qualification & Experience:
- PhD in a Marine Biology, Marine Chemistry, or Oceanography related topic (or equivalent experience supported by a Masters).
- Demonstrated practical skills in sample collection (fieldwork) and analysis (good laboratory practice) for relevant biological, chemical or physical parameters.
- Demonstrated knowledge of data handling and management.
- Proven knowledge of marine science and research activities and outcomes.
- Ability to publish scientific papers and datasets.
- Previous experience of sustained observing systems (time-series).
