Marine Biogeochemistry Scientist - BioGeoSea Project (Institute of Oceanology Polish Academy of Sciences)

€3,000 - €3,900 monthly

Job Description

Job title

Marine Biogeochemistry Scientist.

Company

Institute of Oceanology Polish Academy of Sciences (IO PAN).

Description of the job

The Institute of Oceanology Polish Academy of Sciences (IO PAN) offers a 2-year full-time scientist position in marine biogeochemistry defined by Biogeochemical Essential Ocean Variables (BGC EOVs). The position is funded by the Horizon Europe BioGeoSea project and is based in Sopot, Poland.

IO PAN is playing an increasingly significant role in shaping the European and global oceanographic landscape. It is home to three prestigious international programmes: the International Ocean Carbon Coordination Project (IOCCP) & Global Ocean Observing System (GOOS) Biogeochemistry Panel of Experts, the Integrated Marine Debris Observing System (IMDOS), and BalticEarth. The team actively participates in numerous EU projects including BioGeoSea, OceanICU, BioEcoOcean, SEA-Quester and TRICUSO.

The overall aim of BioGeoSea is to significantly close gaps in GOOS BGC EOVs, validate them, and use them to feed ocean metrics in the form of indicators and data products. The newly employed person will join IOCCP as Project Officer, supported by the IOCCP Project Director and IO PAN's partners, gradually taking responsibility for delivery of project objectives.

Key Tasks:

  • Review existing EOV Specification Sheets across the defined value chain from requirement setting through observing needs, methods, best practices, instrumentations, data flow to data delivery.
  • Identify gaps that need to be addressed considering needs of identified stakeholders.
  • Harmonise and update Specification Sheets and descriptions in collaboration with expert groups and prioritised stakeholders.
  • Contribute to development of ocean biogeochemical indicators addressing ocean acidification, deoxygenation, biological carbon pump and GHG fluxes.
  • Link BGC EOV SS with available relevant standards, best practices, and guidelines deposited in Ocean Best Practices System (OBPS).
  • Ensure integration of BioGeoSea efforts with sister projects ObsSea4Clim and BioEcoOcean.
  • Coordinate input to WMO's database for technical requirements for specific EOVs related to GHG Fluxes and Ocean Acidification.

Requirements

  • Good understanding and knowledge of marine biogeochemistry.
  • Minimum Masters degree in marine biogeochemistry or related discipline.
  • Experience working in large international teams, working groups and/or communities of practice.
  • Excellent command of written and spoken English.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills including modern communication tools and collaborative work spaces.
  • High personal culture, building positive relationships, independence and commitment.
  • PhD in marine biogeochemistry ideally related to observations (preferred).
  • Basic understanding of data management landscape in marine biogeochemistry (preferred).
  • Familiarity with GOOS Framework for Ocean Observing (preferred).
  • Experience organizing in-person and online workshops or events (preferred).
