The Leibniz Institute for Baltic Sea Research Warnemünde (IOW) and the University of Rostock offer the opportunity to combine science and leadership in a forward-looking position, in an environment that actively promotes diversity, personal development and work-life balance.

The successful candidate will take over the lead of the Marine Chemistry department, currently composed of 4 research groups and more than 30 persons, including a dedicated own research group. The position holder will play an active role in shaping the strategic development of the institute.

Your tasks:

  • Leading and developing the Marine Chemistry department at the IOW (approx. 25% of working time).
  • Establishment and management of a high-performance, interdisciplinary research group.
  • Independent marine chemistry research with an internationally visible profile, ideally with a focus on shelf and coastal sea regions.
  • Acquiring third-party funding and initiating large-scale efforts.
  • Cooperation in an international context, including active participation in international organizations and in the "Maritime Systems" profile line at the University of Rostock.
  • Teaching activities (4 hours per week per semester) in the Master's degree programs in Chemistry (specialization in Environmental Analysis) and Marine Biology at the University of Rostock.
  • Active participation and leadership in the management committees of the IOW.

Requirements

  • Internationally recognized scientific achievements in the field of marine chemistry (German habilitation equivalent), with broad expertise.
  • Proven experience in modern marine chemical measurement methods and analytical procedures; in-depth knowledge of organic trace analytics is an advantage.
  • Enthusiasm and competence for interdisciplinary collaboration (e.g. physical, biological, geological/geochemical).
  • Experience in setting up and leading working groups and supervising staff.
  • Proven experience and success in acquiring substantial third-party funding.
  • Excellent didactic skills and experience in teaching.
  • Very good English language skills; willingness to acquire German language skills (language courses funded if required).
  • Ability to promote equality and equal opportunities in the area of responsibility.
