PhD Studentship in Cumulative Impacts of Environmental Changes on Atlantic Salmon Ecology, Population Trends and Survival.
Institut national de la recherche scientifique (INRS).
The Institut national de la recherche scientifique (INRS) is seeking a curious and passionate PhD student to study the cumulative impacts of environmental changes on Atlantic salmon ecology, population trends, and survival. This work will contribute directly to protecting and preserving wild salmon populations in a changing climate.
Natural and anthropogenic threats to freshwater habitat lead to challenges for Atlantic Salmon survival resulting in population declines. Salmon rivers are subject to a variety of cumulative habitat impacts due to development and environmental changes in their freshwater watersheds.
To provide management tools for the conservation and preservation of the species, this project will analyze historical and projected flow and water temperature series to study the cumulative impacts of changing thermal and flow habitat conditions across Atlantic Salmon freshwater life stages by looking at different metrics associated with each life stage (e.g., accumulated thermal units, growth, thermal stress, migration timing in relation to genetic information, age and other factors). Subsequently, the project will assess how these metrics are changing in time to determine the overall freshwater cumulative impacts of changing habitat conditions.
