R&D&I Internship

A unique opportunity for individuals looking to contribute to international projects whilst honing their project management, communications and documentation skills within the company’s Research, Development and Innovation (R&D&I) Department. The successful candidate will be involved in the SMARTPOL project presenting a novel compact pollution detection, monitoring, and analysis system. 

About SMARTPOL Project

In SMARTPOL project, multiscale marine pollution monitoring is proposed which is near real time pollution detection by satellite imagery in global scale, detection by unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) systems to determine pollution spots in regional scale and on the field real-time pollution survey and detection by USVs mounted IoT system such as hyperspectral camera in local scale. SMARTPOL will provide an efficient solution which exploits AI, big data analytics, cloud and edge computing and state-of-the-art sensor technologies for data acquisition, monitoring and management. Using multi sensor data acquisition technologies, SMARTPOL will promote reliable, accurate and validated information to establish a system for sustainable and multifunctional use and management to maximize their contribution to reaching the UN Sustainable Development Goals.

Overview of associated tasks

An opportunity within AquaBioTech Group has arisen for a suitably individual to work as an R&D&I Intern on SMARTPOL research projects at our R&D&I department. The responsibilities of the selected candidate are defined, but not limited to, as follows:

Key Accountabilities

  • Detecting plastic clusters on the sea surface using remote sensing techniques with Sentinel-2 data.
  • Training of an algorithm using the Plastic Index (PI) in a pilot area in Malta.
  • Support in a supervised learning algorithm of a convolutional neural network (CNN).
  • Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) image processing and classification.
  • Use of Plastics Index (PI) and Reversed Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (RNDVI) to process satellite images.
  • Image pre-processing and augmentation techniques.
  • Data processing and analysis in Python and QGIS.
  • Field activities and Oceanographic surveys.
  • In-situ Microplastic sampling using a Manta net.
  • Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) mission planning.
  • Meetings and other tasks as required.

Qualifications Overview

A successful candidate should have a solid background in operational oceanography, marine science, coastal management, or Marine Spatial Planning (MSP). Preferably, Master students on their last year.


  • BSc/MSc in operational or physical oceanography, marine environment, marine ecology, or any related field.
  • Good computing skills in Python and QGIS. 
  • Background in remote sensing.
  • Experience with image augmentation and processing techniques.
  • Background in the use of drones for litter detection and classification.
  • Flexibility and adaptability.
  • Ability to focus on detailed tasks.

Preferred additional experience

  • Knowledge on the occurrence, pathways, sources, and effects of marine litter, in particular plastic pollution. 
  • Experience with Litchi
  • Experience with big data sets.
  • Experience in writing science articles.
  • Experience in citizen science and Ocean literacy.
