Position title: Regional Communication Manager

Reports to: WWF Mediterranean/MMI Director

Salary range: Euros 48,000 – 50,000 gross annual base (depending on experience)

Department: Communications

Location: Rome, Italy

Mission of the Department: The Mediterranean Marine Initiative (MMI) led by WWF Mediterranean is a dedicated effort to preserve the marine biodiversity of the Mediterranean Sea. This initiative coordinates and manages conservation work across the Mediterranean together with WWF National and Country offices and a variety of private and public stakeholders. WWF aims at increasing the protection of the Mediterranean Sea by advocating for policy change, promoting community-led conservation and driving sustainable investments. The Regional Communication Manager will be crucial in steering the communications strategy to enhance the visibility and impact of MMI's conservation efforts across the region.

Main Function: The Regional Communication Manager will develop, manage, and implement a comprehensive communications strategy to ensure strategic alignment and effective execution of communication activities aligned with the conservation goals of the MMI’s Strategy.

Major Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Strategy Development and Implementation
  • Lead the creation and implementation of a regional communications strategy that supports and maximizes the impact of the conservation strategy of WWF Mediterranean and its projects.;
  • Manage or support the planning, development and distribution of communications products, incl. reports, videos, blog posts, etc.;
  • Liaise with the regional policy manager to ensure a smooth and effective policy communication work, incl. supporting policy papers and events;
  • Coordinate with WWF national offices to ensure messages are coherent and effective across different regions.
  • Media and Public Relations
  • Manage media relations and maximize media opportunities to enhance the visibility of WWF’s work in the Mediterranean;
  • Prepare and distribute press releases, organize press conferences, and manage media requests.
  • Digital Communications
  • Oversee the management of digital content (e.g. website, multimedia products) and social media strategies to engage with key institutional and policy stakeholders effectively;
  • Manage contacts with consultants and professional photo-video makers for the development of powerful visual stories and materials (e.g. photographic projects, short-documentaries;
  • Monitor digital trends and analytics to adjust strategies as needed.
  • Event Management and Donor Engagement
  • Plan and implement communication actions and products for public events;
  • Develop materials and presentations for donor reporting and meetings.
  • Internal Communications
  • Ensure effective internal communications within WWF Mediterranean to keep all staff informed and engaged;
  • Facilitate communication training for MMI staff to enhance their outreach capabilities.
  • Monitoring and Reporting
  • Liaise with the Programme Manager to evaluate the effectiveness of communication strategies and report on progress to the MMI board and donors;
  • Adjust communication strategies based on feedback and evolving organizational needs.


Required Qualifications

  • A university degree in Communications, Marketing, Public Relations, or another related field;
  • At least 5 years of professional experience in a communications role, with proven success in developing and implementing communication strategies;
  • Experience working in the conservation or non-profit sector is highly desirable.


Required Skills and Competencies

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English. Proficiency in another Mediterranean language is an asset;
  • Good ability to write and to develop creative communications actions;
  • Strong leadership and team management skills;
  • Ability to work effectively in a multicultural team environment;
  • Strategic thinker with excellent organizational and creative problem-solving skills;

Working Relationships

Internal - This role involves close collaboration with the WWF Mediterranean Director, the MMI managers and the whole of the WWF team in the Mediterranean region.

External – Collaboration with donors, vendors, corporate partners (if any) or any other stakeholders.
