Work Experience

Researcher
Jan 2021 - Present Institute for security studies

In my current role at the Institute for Security Studies (ISS) in Pretoria, I focus on strengthening African maritime policy and practice, particularly in the realms of ocean governance, blue economy, climate risk, and human security. Through evidence-based research outputs, I aim to enhance maritime security and address maritime crime while promoting sustainable development in Africa. A key aspect of my work involves building technical expertise and capacity by equipping decision-makers with the necessary research advice, tools, and capacity.

I assist colleagues with both qualitative and quantitative research projects, employing ISS-approved ethical research methodologies. My responsibilities include analyzing research results and collaborating with colleagues to enhance the quality and relevance of our analysis. I document research findings in formats tailored to the target audience, aligned with our communication strategy, and designed to achieve the intended impact through ISS Today articles, policy briefs, and reports. As a member of the ISS Ethics Research Committee, I contribute to formulating policy on research-related matters that impact our strategic objectives. I ensure that researchers adhere to ethical standards and uphold the scientific merit of research involving human subjects, applying ethical considerations to the broader society that funds and is affected by our research.

In line with our planned communication strategy and target audience, I assist in disseminating research results and policy recommendations through written products such as ISS Today articles, reports, policy briefs, monographs, and papers. I also participate in events such as seminars, briefings, and workshops to share our findings and recommendations. Additionally, I peer-review the analysis and written products of colleagues within my field of expertise, ensuring high-quality outputs.

I play a crucial role in stakeholder management, helping to identify key stakeholders, peer groups, donors, and beneficiaries that can enhance the efficiency, relevance, and quality of ISS’s work. I also assist in implementing effective monitoring and evaluation plans, ensuring that our projects meet their objectives and deliver meaningful outcomes. Through these efforts, I contribute to creating accountable and inclusive institutions that foster a favourable environment for improved maritime security and the sustainable development of blue economies in Africa.
