Dr. Muhammad Ziad is an experienced professional with demonstrated knowledge and diverse working experience of more than thirteen in the field of Environmental Services. Skilled in solid waste management, Plastic Recycling, Waste (Waste water and Municipal solid waste) auditing (waste characterization & composition analysis), developing waste management operational plans, trainings modules and manuals, recovering energy from waste, conducting Environmental Assessments (IEE & EIA) and Environmental management plans and collaborating with donors, humanitarian partners and multi-lateral organizations. Strong research skills and environmental services professional stemming from a Bachelor's degree to PhD in Environmental Sciences with focus on energy recovery from Plastic/Solid waste.
As a Manager SWM for WSSP I am responsible for the overall planning and management of solid waste and waste water / sewerages and drainages system especially at field level in 22 urban union councils of district Peshawar. Following are some of the major roles assigned.
o Identification and redressal of critical issues of the existing SWM system through preparation of GAP analysis.
o Conducting waste audit to assess generation rate, evaluate composition, measuring of recyclables items in waste stream. Also carried waste streams analysis by material flow analysis (MFA) to assess the quantify the different wastes components, their sources and their ultimate use as a resource.
o Monitoring of operational performance and making recommendations for system improvements with special emphasis in the areas of expected tonnage, vehicle transitions, equipment maintenance and fuel usage, equipment rental needs, and coordination of contract services.
o Preparation of environmental monitoring guidelines and coordinate with concern environmental protection agency along with other stakeholders in review of existing legislation and regulatory framework for brining further improvements in existing solid waste management system.
o Develop, manage and administer all aspects of an integrated waste collection service including planning and delivery of waste and recycling collection services, fleet and service scheduling, service frequency/optimization planning, collection fleet optimization, implementation and deployment of technology into collection services and advisory on equipment assessment and procurement.
o Prepare SWM operational plans and manuals, training modules and carry out induction of staff on the training manuals, modules and other solid waste management techniques.
o Develop operational guidelines in coordination with fleet management section for effective and efficient utilization of fleet.
o Ensure compliance to the guidelines provided to the concern staff for safe handling, transportation & disposal of waste, proper and timely repair and maintenance of vehicles for timely collection and disposal of solid waste in general and special purpose sewerage and drainage machinery such as Jetting machine, sucking machine, dewatering pumps etc. for timely responding to any emergency situation.
o Provide technical input for the development of environmental sustainability policies, strategies and plans, including aspects such as recycling of plastic waste to liquid oil and gas, zero waste to landfill and circular economy.
o Preparation of annual budgets and assist management in procurement of necessary waste collection and disposal machinery.
o Preparation of different estimates and contract documents for hiring of private contractors for the collection and disposal of secondary waste, hiring of private manpower for the collection of waste repair and annual repair and maintenance of sewerage and drainage system contract.
o Administer and manage solid waste management collection contracts i.e. (hired private Manpower contract and outsourced secondary collection and transportation contract) and monitor performance and efficiency of the contractors in light of the agreed terms and conditions.
o Time to time coordination and consultation with the stakeholders such as Government departments, donor agencies, civil society members and political and elected representatives for ensuring their due role.
o Responsible for the monitoring of solid waste management services and operations (attendance of sanitary workers, Sweeping, waste collection & transportation).
o Responsible for the overall planning, management, implementation and supervision of solid waste management strategies for the efficient and effective collection, transportation and safe disposal of solid waste.
o Responsible for the ensuring compliance in solid waste collection, transportation and disposal in accordance with the environmental standards and protocols.
o Develop detailed implementation plans, monthly, weekly plans and procedures for efficient operations and provides input for future requirements.
o Development and conduction of questionnaire, Key informant interviews and focus group discussion for the purpose to identify the gaps in the current system and to bring further improvements through active participation of the general public.
o Develop proposals regarding community mobilization, community awareness and behavior communication strategies for ensuring sustainability in existing solid waste management system.
o Develop strategies for sustainability in solid waste management system by ensuring the implementation of waste segregation at source level and environment friendly techniques such as composting and waste to energy.
o Provide cross sectional support to the Zonal Manager in planning, implementation and execution of solid waste management activities for effective operational activities.
o Plan, coordinate, supervise, and review the maintenance of equipment, machinery and vehicles associated with the solid waste management and sanitation system.
o Identify community needs through age, gender, diversity mainstreaming (AGDM) approach, including focus group discussions (FGD, s) and individual interviews.
o Disseminate information related to health and hygiene and sanitation in an easily understandable format i.e. distribution of IEC materials and awareness sessions for the Afghan refugees.
o Assist in identifying WASH issues in beneficiary communities and flag them for the attention of supervisor.
o Plan and coordinate procurements in line with approved specifications / Bills of Quantity (BoQ), and to ensure that the hygiene kits and other and items are timely purchased and delivered.
o Assist in DRC coordination and interaction with partner organizations including UNHCR, relevant government departments and local authorities on a regular basis.
o Plan, design and implement protection awareness-raising activities for refugees, communities and NGOs, in consultation with the target audience.
o Provide technical support in emergency response situations, including planning and coordination of WASH interventions in humanitarian settings.
o Co-operate and interact with partner organizations, relevant government departments and local authorities such as UNHCR WASH staff and other WASH partners on a regular basis.
o Actively participate in the WASH cluster and work with appropriate stakeholders.
o Accurately and responsibly document information and share with appropriate partners, including UNHCR and ECHO, with approval of supervisor or senior management.
o Facilitate the M&E staff in collecting project related information.

o Attended three days (20th -22nd June 2023) training on “Humanitarian Negotiation Skills” in Doha Qatar organized by The Netherlands Institute for International relations Clingendael.
o Participated in 13th International Conference on Waste Management and Technology (ICWMT) held in Beijing China (21st – 24th, March).
o Participated in Senior Training Workshop on Urban Mining and Associated Pollution Prevention under “the Belt and Road Initiative” held in Beijing and Shanghai, China from 20th March to 2nd April 2018, jointly hosted by the Basel Convention Regional Centre for Asia and the Pacific (BCRC China) and the Shanghai Collaborative Innovation Centre for WEEE Recycling (WEEE Center).
