I am a marine biologist with experience in environmental impact studies of human activities at the sea, as well, I have a good knowledge of water framework directive, marine strategy framework directive, habitats directive, and other environmental directives. I am also interested in data analysis with bioinformatic tools that I consider essential in a cross-discipline approach to environmental studies.
Early before graduating as a biologist, I decided to pursue my interest in seas and oceans by studying how human activities can impact them. At that time, I was living in the north of Argentina and I had the opportunity to participate in a fishing study whose main objective was to help aboriginal fishermen to improve their fishing techniques sustainably.
While working as a marine consultant I was in charge of managing the sampling campaigns, updating the data analysis procedures, and writing different types of studies such as environmental impact studies, marine conservation, or European Directives documents. I also got experience in dealing with customers due to this work being linked with close contact with the clients, who used to be local and regional governments.
For 5 years my work focused on the Water Framework Directive, being a member of the writing team of the Canary Islands Hydrological Plans of the 2nd and 3rd cycle. My tasks focused on coastal surface water masses: management of surveillance programs, planning of sampling campaigns, evaluation of the chemical and ecological status of water masses, identification of highly modified water masses, pressure analysis (DPSIR), strategic environmental evaluation, preparation of plans (GIS) and various tasks related to reporting. Likewise, and given the “umbrella” nature of the WFD, I worked with the Marine Strategies Framework Directive, especially with the descriptors related to the WFD such as descriptors 5 (eutrophication) and 8 (pollutants).
Currently, I am part of the Environment Department of Red Eléctrica, where my work focuses on the management of marine campaigns, writing environmental impact studies, coordination of marine environmental supervision, and various issues related to the development of marine infrastructure, such as the development of initiatives for the restoration of marine habitats or the development of new mitigation and impact control measures.
At the same, I used to study different courses or masters about my job that could improve my skills and offer me new roles as courses about ArcGIS. In the last years, I developed an interest in statistics and data analysis teaching myself R and statistics to improve my data analysis.
Over most of my career, I worked as part of teams where coordination was essential. I consider that individual work is more productive and efficient when coworkers and project partners communicate fluidly. I welcome taking responsibility for organizing myself and others, and during my time as a marine consultant, I coordinated the sampling campaigns with the technicians. Currently, I coordinate the marine environment activities of Red Eléctrica's environmental department, which include the management of all environmental study and monitoring work, as well as participation in public participation processes with marine environment stakeholders. I would like to highlight that I am the manager of marine restoration projects (seagrass and reefs) for Red Eléctrica, where we are working to develop new nature-based solutions. As well, I also manage the lobby actions for better perception of underwater submarine cables from the stakeholders, as with the fishers or environmental organizations.
