I completed Research Assistant training at the Institute of Marine Research and went on to join the team in training new students and continued to undertake research surveys. In this role I conducted underwater field surveys in 3D reef modelling, diver operated Stereo Video System (SVS), benthic assays, and reef impact protocols, I lead tropical reef fish and coral identification lectures and guided training dives. Post-survey responsibilities included using software systems (CPCe, EventMeasure, AgiSoft MetaShape and ImageJ) for data processing and analysis.
The role required application of marine ecosystem management principles: habitat and species monitoring and assessment, habitat restoration including ‘Corals of Opportunity’ project, active population control of overabundant species.

In addition to being a deckhand and carrying out duties associated with this role- such as being involved in IUU patrols, docking/undocking operations, general cleaning and maintenance- I also took on the responsibility of biologist, acting as a liaison to Gabonese government fisheries personnel and documenting bycatch of purse seine and trawling operations.
I collaborated with Gabonese Fisheries Officers and on-board observers to increase understanding of target/non-target catches on trawlers and purse seiners. I was part of a team that developed and promoted release protocols and best practices, provided recommendations for the NGO's ongoing campaigns. Additionally, I collected underwater video footage of marine species, for the subsequent identification and cataloguing of species.

I communicated with general public about the marine and terrestrial ecosystems and wildlife of Vancouver Island and coastal British Colombia. Additionally, I conducted safety orientation prior to guests boarding vessels.

In this role I organised and instructed conservation-focused Open Water SCUBA courses. This meant organising schedules, equipment, facilities, transport, online- and in-person training prior to the in-water classes.
Practical SCUBA lessons involved being responsible for the safety of up to eight students.
I taught marine conservation classes, emphasising the impact of MPAs on biodiversity, to school age children, up to university level students involving a classroom session then a snorkel tour.
