Hello, My name is Gia.
I have a first-class degree in marine science and conservation along with the Head of School Prize for Outstanding Achievement. I consider myself an all-rounder with a keen interest in scientific communications, practical fieldwork, invasive species, fisheries management, coastal conservation, and blue economy.
I am well versed with a range of monitoring equipment such as CTD, Niskin Bottles, ADCP, grab sampling etc. I am also competent with MATLAB, R, and GIS software as a result of my dissertation where I used remote sensing to create a predictive model for the whereabouts of beluga whales in the Alaskan Arctic.
I am a certified PADI dive master and also have experience of underwater survey design and implementation, having conducted research on a field trip to the Bahamas during my degree. In my previous life, I worked in corporate environments managing people and gaining a broad understanding of how the world works financially and politically.
I am currently freelancing as a writer as I travel, writing blogs for a conservation-focused diving school in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico. I also run a successful YouTube channel helping students to better focus on their studies and achieve their goals with scientifically backed methods.
I am a confident public speaker and educator who relishes being outside my comfort zone and experiencing new environments. I am dynamic in my approach to situations and abe to exercise organisation and determination as required.
I am ideally looking for remote work that will allow me to continue my travels or for APAC-based positions.
If my profile suits a project you are working on or know someone who may benefit from my skillset, please don't hesitate to get in contact.
Best - Gia
As I scuba dive my way around APAC as a digital nomad, I also freelance as a ghostwriter, crafting blogs and articles tailored for Scuba diving websites. The goal is to elevate their online presence and SEO while advocating for marine science and conservation.
With a background as a dive master and marine scientist, I bring a unique perspective to my writing, creating each piece with authenticity and accuracy. Recently, I collaborated with Cabo Private Guide, based in Baja California. For them, I wrote a 7000-word guide to diving in the Baja peninsula. This article of mine is set for publication soon.
In addition to my writing, a good chunk of my time is spent on my YouTube channel, @StudySonicFocus. There, I create calming study music and share helpful tips to support students in reaching their academic goals. It's a rewarding endeavor that perfectly complements my writing gigs.
Fresh out of university I travelled around Italy, Greece and SE Asia both gaining my scuba qualifications and working as a Dive Master.
Becoming a Dive Master requires a blend of expertise, responsibility, and passion for marine conservation. In my role, I made sure to educate guests about conservation and preservation, emphasizing the importance of safegaurding delicate ecosystems.
With a keen eye for species identification, I was also sure to enrich diving experiences by highlighting unique marine life encounters followed up by educating my guests on the species during surface intervals.
Planning dives involves meticulous attention to detail, ensuring safety protocols are diving limits are followed. I also became adept at handling unpredictable and potentially hazardous situations, swiftly implementing risk management strategies. These often included unseasonal current profiles where I had to assist guests in navigating these unpredictable currents while keeping them and myself safe.
My faculty approached me after being recommended by my professors to become a course-specific student ambassador. My responsibilities were to talk in-depth about my course and the university, allowing potential students and prospective parents to gain a full understanding of my course and topics. Here I also conducted survey outreach to future/current students, allowing the university to gain important insight into ways to improve and provide for students.
While pursuing my studies, I had the wonderful opportunity to work part-time at our local aquarium as part of the events team. It was an exciting role that allowed me to explore my passion for marine conservation and education further.
Interacting with patrons was always a highlight for me as I got to share fascinating insights about our local ecosystem, hoping to inspire a greater appreciation for marine life and conservation efforts.
