Personal Summary

I started with a BSc in Fisheries and Marine Science from Khulna University, Bangladesh. My journey continued with an MSc in Aquaculture from Ghent University, Belgium, where I studied cranial ontogeny in European sea bass larvae reared under different conditions that deepened my insight into developmental biology and its applications to aquaculture, which is crucial for effective fish breeding, aquaculture, and conservation strategies. I completed my PhD in Evolutionary Ecology at the University of Western Australia, exploring the effects of dietary manipulation on various reproductive traits in guppies—a model fish species. This research was critical in understanding how environmental factors influence the expression of phenotypes and genotypes in fish populations. During my first postdoc at Tokyo University of Marine Science and Technology, I studied the transgenerational effects of temperature on phenotypes and reproductive success in pejerrey and Japanese medaka. This work is directly relevant to managing the impacts of climate change on aquatic organisms. After each of these programs, I returned to my home country and applied the knowledge and skills I acquired to conduct research on fish breeding, ecology, and sustainable aquaculture in my country. At UC Davis during my 2nd postdoc and current position as an Asst. Project Scientist, I have been working with three different types of smelt fish such as endangered delta smelt, threatened longfin smelt and invasive wakasagi. Here, I am deeply involved in hands-on conservation techniques—including but not limited to developing captive rearing and breeding strategies, assessing sperm and egg quality, rearing and weaning of larvae under different conditions, and trying to address the challenges posed by invasive wakasagi to ensure the survival of our native species under different challenging conditions. Thus, throughout my academic and professional journey, I have acquired a robust set of skills and experiences that have prepared me well to contribute effectively to the field of aquaculture with a particular focus on fish breeding, conservation, and restoration.
