OceanHub Africa (OHA) is on a mission to inspire and support ocean-minded start-ups with the express aim of nurturing an environmentally conscious and profitable economy that effectively mitigates the effects of global warming as well as oceans' overexploitation and pollution throughout the African continent.

1000 Ocean Startups (1000OS) is a coalition powering real world solutions to address urgent problems, with diligence and a determination to achieve positive change for the ocean. Since launching in 2021, 1000OS has grown to be the largest global ocean innovation network. 1000OS is hosted under the World Economic Forum's Ocean Action Agenda and was co-founded by Members including OceanHub Africa.

The intern will support the Community Workstream in delivering its governance responsibilities with the roll-out of the new 1000OS Community and in coordinating operational activities across the Lighthouse where needed. Additionally, the intern will support the 1000OS Africa Regional Community and its formal launch ahead of the Our Ocean Conference in June 2026.

Key performance areas:

1. Community Workstream Support:

  • Support implementation of the updated community structure beyond core membership.
  • Coordinate community-facing communications, updates, and documentation.
  • Assist in maintaining governance processes, including meeting preparation and follow up.
  • Track engagement across community tiers using Airtable and support community analytics.

2. 1000OS Africa Regional Community Launch:

  • Support planning, logistics, and coordination for the formal launch at the Our Ocean Conference in June 2026.
  • Maintain the Africa community pipeline, outreach tracking, and member follow ups.
  • Assist in preparing materials including briefs, talking points, outreach packets, and engagement overviews.
  • Coordinate directly with partners, ESOs (entrepreneur-supporting organisations), and internal teams to ensure alignment.

3. Operational coordination across the Lighthouse:

  • Assist staff across the Lighthouse with operational tasks, data structuring, and process improvements.
  • Maintain shared tools, trackers, and Airtable interfaces.
  • Support workflow coordination between the Community Workstream, regional communities, and core coalition activities.

4. Material development:

  • Draft and refine internal and external communications with clear and professional tone.
  • Support development of presentations, meeting materials, summaries, and reporting.
  • Collect, organise, and maintain member or partner materials deposited through community engagement.

5. General Program Support:

  • Support meeting scheduling, note-taking, follow-up tracking, and consolidation of inputs.
  • Contribute to Lighthouse-wide reporting and knowledge management.
  • Provide ad hoc coordination support during peak operational periods and events.

Requirements

Minimum qualifications:

  • Tertiary qualification (bachelors) in Public policy, International relations, Environmental studies, Development studies, Business studies or similar.

Minimum experience:

  • Strong coordination, research, analytical and organisational skills.
  • Working knowledge of Airtable.
  • Ability to synthesize information and produce clear communications.
  • Interest in impact-driven work, sustainability, or ocean-related issues.
  • Ability to work across teams and manage multiple priorities.
  • Strong writing and documentation skills.

Desired experience:

  • Experience in stakeholder engagement or project coordination preferred.
