Job Description

Job title

Researcher Position in Satellite Oceanography.

Company

Nansen Environmental and Remote Sensing Center (NERSC).

Description of the job

The Nansen Environmental and Remote Sensing Center (NERSC) is seeking a researcher to advance the understanding of coastal and open-ocean dynamics through the integration of satellite remote sensing, numerical models, and in situ observations. This is a permanent position within the Satellite Oceanography group based in Bergen, Norway.

The Nansen Center is a Norwegian environmental research institute, established in Bergen in 1986. The Center's core activity is research and development focused on the physical and biological conditions of surrounding ocean areas — in the Arctic and beyond. The primary goal is to understand and predict global climate change, and the Center strives to be at the forefront of climate and environmental research. The Center currently employs around 75 people from more than 20 countries.

A key priority for the Satellite Oceanography group is the continuous refinement of remote-sensing retrieval techniques. The characterization of coastal processes influencing essential ocean variables, such as sea level, currents, and sea state, is fundamental for exploiting the full potential of current and upcoming satellite missions.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop and validate algorithms for improved retrieval of essential ocean variables in coastal and open-ocean regions.
  • Explore synergies between multi-sensor satellite data and numerical models to enhance representation of ocean dynamics.
  • Contribute to the design and assessment of future satellite missions by identifying observational needs and gaps.
  • Collaborate in national and international research projects supporting both operational and climate applications of ocean remote sensing.

Requirements

Essential qualifications:

  • PhD in oceanography, geophysical sciences, or a closely related discipline.
  • Demonstrated expertise in satellite oceanography, evidenced by a strong track record of peer-reviewed publications.
  • Solid knowledge of coastal ocean processes.
  • Strong programming skills, with experience working with complex codes.
  • Experience in numerical modelling of ocean dynamics.
  • Experience working with interdisciplinary and international research teams.
  • Familiarity with data assimilation and integration of in situ observations.
  • Fluent in both spoken and written English, corresponding to "C1 Advanced".

Personal skills:

  • Structured and self-motivated.
  • Ability to take initiative and seek new solutions for theoretical and practical problems.
  • Good collaboration skills and ability to work efficiently in a team.
  • Interest in participating in international collaborative projects.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
