NTERNSHIP: Oceanic Global is looking for a volunteer intern to help us grow the Blue Standard, Oceanic Global’s program that works with businesses to eliminate single-use plastics and adopt comprehensive sustainability measures. The ideal candidate is a proactive individual who is passionate about providing environmental solutions for our planet and oceans health, and who cares deeply about how businesses impact the environment. A strong background or foundation in sustainability, waste management, consulting, project management, hospitality, or environmental science is desired. This is a Spring / Summer Internship, ideally starting in June with option to continue to the fall. The start date and weekly hours are flexible.
OCEANIC GLOBAL’S INDUSTRY SOLUTION PROGRAM: THE BLUE STANDARD
Launched in 2021 as an evolution of Oceanic Global's long standing industry solution program (formerly known as The Oceanic Standard), the Blue Standard (“Blue”) combats greenwashing, establishes universal accountability for sustainable business leadership, and empowers industries and businesses of all sizes to achieve measurable impact that protects our blue planet. Blue features two core offerings: a 3-star sustainability verification system for Business Operations and a verification system for Product and Packing that verifies plastic-free consumer goods.
Blue offers specialized programs and consultation for industries including: hospitality, music, events, office spaces, professional sports, consumer packaged goods, and more, as well as free educational resources, step-by-step auditing and consultation support, and buying deals with a network of over 300 vetted solution providers to help businesses eliminate single-use plastics and operate sustainably.
Blue has verified the sustainability achievements of over 500 businesses across 50+ countries to date, as well as helped shape 7 environmental policies worldwide.
POSITION, DUTIES & OPPORTUNITIES INCLUDE:
Program Administrative Support
Manage the Blue Master database to help track progress
Update the database with latest interaction notes and required follow ups for businesses
Ensure the database is up to date with latest status of active businesses, consultants, products and solution providers
Manage Blue Standard email, website and inquiries to help build our community
Update Blue website with newly verified businesses and case studies
Reply to and track Blue website and email inquiries in assistance with the Blue Manager
Manage Blue Consultant community, including responding to training inquiries, tracking new consultants, answering consultant questions, co-hosting “Office Hour” sessions, and assisting with consultant inquiries
Manage and Grow Blue Solution Provider Database (Oceanic Global’s database of sustainable vendors & service providers)
Create and design case studies, infographics, one-pagers, educational resources and more on sustainable business operations
Help plan and apply for events and conferences
Conduct research on sustainable product innovations and sustainability standards
Other tasks as assigned
Support Blue Program Growth & Business Development
Research prospective businesses
Conduct outreach to identified businesses to help grow the program
Coordinate and run introductory meetings to prospective Blue Businesses, Blue Consultants, and Blue Solution Providers
Blue Standard Consulting Support
Become a trained Blue Consultant and provide assistance for businesses implementing sustainable operating practices for verification through the Blue Standard.
Assist businesses and perform Blue Consulting duties in collaboration with the Program Manager:
Work with clients to outline sustainability goals and identify relevant recognition opportunities through Blue
Work with the operations team of each client to outline current operational practices and purchasing and identify opportunities for improvement
Provide recommendations for sustainable operating practices each client can implement
Help the client put together any necessary documentation to confirm compliance for the Blue Seal of interest
Help develop messaging and strategy for communicating and celebrating your sustainability commitment to the client’s employees, customers, and the general public.
EXPERIENCE
Required:
Highly organized, attention to details and proactive follow-up (passionate to push projects forward)
Proficiency using Google Drive (Docs, Sheets, Slides, Project Management software such as Coda)
Passionate about ocean conservation and environmental sustainability
At least one prior internships or work experience in the sustainability, ocean, environment, ESG or consulting fields
Strong interpersonal and effective communication skills
Preferred:
Experience with sales & growing programs
Understanding of overall limitations and regional specificity to waste management infrastructure
Understanding of plastics impacts to our planet
Understanding of hospitality industry operational requirements
Time and Salary
15-20 hours / week
5 month internship
Unpaid Volunteer Internship, with school credit available if compatible with your school
Working hours Eastern (EST)
