Job Description

Job title

Advocacy Communications & Donor Relations Intern.

Company

Antarctic and Southern Ocean Coalition (ASOC).

Description of the job

The Antarctic and Southern Ocean Coalition (ASOC) is seeking an Advocacy Communications & Donor Relations Intern to help strengthen outreach to supporters and communicate the impact of its international conservation work. This is an excellent opportunity for a college or graduate student interested in how advocacy organizations communicate policy priorities, engage supporters, and build the foundation for long-term conservation success.

Since 1978, ASOC has been working solely for the protection of Antarctica and the surrounding Southern Ocean. The organisation's mission is to protect the vulnerable ecosystems of Antarctica and the Southern Ocean by providing a unified voice for Antarctic conservation. ASOC represents the global conservation community in the halls where decisions about Antarctica's future are made, operating at the intersection of science, policy, and advocacy. Through collaboration with governments, NGOs, scientists, and supporters, the organisation advances measures that preserve one of the planet's most unique and fragile regions.

The intern will turn policy and science updates into compelling communication materials, support fundraising campaigns, assist with donor relations, and contribute to digital content and design. ASOC is open to six- or twelve-month internships, with the possibility of extension.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Working with the fundraising copywriter, build and distribute monthly newsletters in Mailchimp, turning scientific and policy updates into compelling stories for ASOC's supporters.
  • Support fundraising campaigns (e.g., World Penguin Day, summer appeals, year-end fundraising) by building and scheduling email appeals, tracking performance (opens, clicks, responses), and summarizing results to inform future outreach.
  • Support donor relations by assisting with stewardship activities that help donors feel informed, appreciated, and connected to ASOC's impact.
  • Run donor reports in Neon to track donor activity.
  • Assist with advocacy communications by supporting content development for blogs, social media, and the website, and reviewing existing materials to identify needed updates or improvements.
  • Create digital materials in Canva, such as visuals for supporter communications and social media graphics.
  • Maintain consistent, clear messaging that reflects ASOC's mission, values, and policy priorities across platforms.
  • Provide support for fundraising campaigns, donor outreach, administrative tasks, and other communications initiatives as needed.

What Interns Will Gain:

  • Insight into how advocacy organizations communicate policy issues and engage supporters.
  • Experience translating scientific and policy content for diverse audiences, including donors and the general public.
  • Opportunities to contribute to advocacy work and exposure to international environmental policy.

Time commitment: Approximately 20 hours/month, with potential for additional hours around major fundraising campaigns.

Duration: 6 or 12 months, with possibility of extension.

Requirements

  • Strong interest in environmental advocacy, science communication, donor relations, and/or nonprofit development.
  • Experience with or willingness to learn Mailchimp, Canva, Hootsuite, Neon or other CRM databases.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to work independently and meet deadlines.
  • Creativity and a willingness to learn new communication tools.

Location

Remote (with preference for hybrid in Washington DC, Southern California, or Tallahassee, Florida, United States).

Salary
