Description of the job

The Hellenic Centre for Marine Research (HCMR) is seeking a Biologist with a PhD in Marine Ecology to study the dynamics and management of seagrass ecosystems, with an emphasis on ecological processes and anthropogenic pressures. The position requires a high level of scientific expertise, research experience and the ability to apply scientific knowledge to environmental policies and management actions.

The successful candidate will join a multidisciplinary lab of highly motivated researchers at the Hellenic Centre for Marine Research in Crete, with opportunities for transnational collaborations within multiple research projects and networks.

Main Responsibilities:

  • Data collection and analysis (biological, physicochemical, ecological).
  • Impact assessment of anthropogenic activities on marine ecosystems (e.g. pollution, climate change).
  • Writing of scientific publications, technical reports and research proposals.
  • Presentation of research results at conferences and scientific forums.
  • Participation in interdisciplinary research groups and international projects.
  • Provision of scientific support to management bodies, NGOs or public authorities.

Requirements

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Biology, Marine Biology, Oceanography, Marine Sciences, Marine Ecology or related science.
  • PhD in Marine Biology, Oceanography, Marine Sciences, Marine Ecology, Environmental Biology or other related subject.
  • Proven research experience of at least 2 years.
  • Publications (peer-reviewed) in International Journals.
  • Excellent knowledge of the English language.
  • Scuba diving certification at the rescue diver level.

Desirable Qualifications:

  • Experience in collecting and analysing seagrass data.
  • Knowledge of GIS, remote sensing or ecological modelling.
  • Experience in linking scientific research with environmental policies.
  • Ability to work autonomously and collaborate in a research environment.
