Description of the job
UNESCO is seeking one Ocean Science intern to assist the UNESCO Regional Bureau for Science and Culture in Europe (Venice, Italy) in the implementation of its Ocean Literacy (OL) activities.
Under the direct supervision of the responsible Senior Programme Officer and the authority of the Regional Bureau Director, the intern will undertake the following tasks:
- Map and organize Ocean Literacy materials developed under UNESCO initiatives (e.g., videos, educational resources, toolkits, guidelines).
- Review existing Ocean Literacy materials to assess relevance, coherence, and alignment with current frameworks, and identify materials that may require updating or revision.
- Support internal coordination and knowledge management, including organizing the team's shared digital folders, databases, and reference documents, as well as contributing to internal briefs, summaries, and concept notes related to Ocean Literacy activities.
- Provide internal support to Ocean Literacy projects (including SEA BEYOND, Blue School Global Network, Save the Wave and EU4Ocean) through background research, content review, and other supporting activities as needed.
- Manage the booking system for the SEA BEYOND Ocean Literacy Centre.
- Support the creation of educational materials for the SEA BEYOND Ocean Literacy Centre.
- Perform any other related tasks as required by the supervisor.
Learning Opportunities:
- General understanding of the work and mission of a UNESCO Regional Bureau for Science and Culture in Europe, with a special focus on the Ocean Literacy programme work.
- Develop practical experience in reviewing, organizing, and managing educational and outreach materials within an international organization.
- Gain exposure to internal programme coordination, knowledge management, and analytical support for international initiatives related to ocean science and sustainability.
- Strengthen skills in research, content analysis, and preparation of internal briefs and reference documents in a multicultural and multidisciplinary environment.
Duration: 6 months.
Period: April - September 2026.
Important Information:
- The intern is responsible for obtaining any necessary visas.
- The intern must arrange and finance travel and stay to Venice.
- The intern must show proof of comprehensive health insurance valid in Italy for the entire internship period. UNESCO will only provide limited insurance coverage up to USD 30,000 against risk of illness, disability, or death during the internship period.
- Interns are entitled to 2.5 days of leave per month during the internship.
Requirements
Mandatory Qualifications:
- Currently enrolled and on the 3rd (third) year or final year of Bachelor's degree; OR currently enrolled in a second-level or Master's or PhD (or equivalent) university programme in marine biology, environmental and ocean sciences, or a related field; OR recently graduated with a Master's degree or PhD, 12 months prior to the start of the internship.
- Basic knowledge of UNESCO's mandate, structure and activities, with special focus in the field of sciences.
- Working knowledge of the Microsoft Office package (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
- Working knowledge of online repository and file management systems (e.g. Google Drive).
- Full proficiency in English (working language for the assignment); knowledge of other UN Languages and Italian is an asset.
Desirable Qualifications:
- Environmental education experience.
- Project management experience.

Venice, Italy.
Salary
Unpaid internship. UNESCO does not remunerate interns.
