Description of the job

The Research Unit of the University of the Aegean seeks a First Stage Researcher (R1-MSc) in the subject of Biology with experience in Marine Biology and Ecology. The researcher will contribute to the conservation and recovery of Pinna nobilis in Greek waters through integrated field, monitoring, and restoration activities within the LIFE24-NAT-ES-PINNACARE project, funded by the European Climate, Infrastructure and Environment Executive Agency (CINEA).

The position will involve updating and evaluating optimal conservation sites and conducting long-term monitoring of transplanted and tagged juveniles in the Amvrakikos Gulf and the gulfs of Kalloni and Gera in Lesvos Island, including assessments of survival, growth, and environmental conditions using in-situ measurements and continuous sensor data. The researcher will also support the installation of larval collectors, investigate recruitment dynamics, and implement transplantation and repopulation actions under strict biosecurity and environmental monitoring protocols.

Building on the institution's extensive expertise in fan mussel population ecology and conservation, the post will contribute to safeguarding remaining individuals, supporting natural recovery processes, and informing management measures and stakeholder engagement to enhance the long-term persistence of the species in Greece.

The contract duration is until 31/12/2027 with possibility of extension according to project needs. The selected candidate will offer services at University facilities in person and will also conduct field work as needed.

The researcher will contribute to the implementation of the following work packages:

  • WP1 Project management and coordination.
  • WP2 Management principles for Pinna nobilis populations in lagoon ecosystems.
  • WP3 Updating Monitoring & selection of optimum sites.
  • WP4 Developing Biosecurity Program and Stakeholder training for Conservation Actions.
  • WP5 Installation of larvae collectors.
  • WP6 Exploration and management of natural populations.
  • WP11 Follow up of juvenile, resistant & translocated individuals.
  • WP12 Follow up environmental improvement.
  • WP13 Monitoring and evaluation of the impact of the project actions.
  • WP14 Development of socioeconomic impact studies.
  • WP15 Public awareness and dissemination of results.
  • WP16 Transferability & Sustainability, replication and exploitation of project results.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree and Master's Degree or equivalent in Biology, Biodiversity, Zoology, or related field.
  • 1–4 years of research experience.
  • Experience in scientific diving.
  • Driving license B (car).
  • Good English knowledge.
  • Ability to work closely and collaboratively with other team members.
  • Ability to multi-task, prioritize and meet deadlines.
  • Ability to be flexible and change between projects and tasks as requirements change.
  • Excellent problem-solving, verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and in groups.

Mytilene (Lesvos), Greece.

Salary

Hourly rate: €18–28/hour (depending on experience and qualifications, including tax and social security). Allocated budget: €35,000.
