Description of the job

The Research Unit of the University of the Aegean seeks a First Stage Researcher (R1-MSc) with experience in underwater passive acoustics and good understanding of bioacoustics. The researcher will contribute to the implementation of the LIFE MareNatura project (LIFE22-NAT-EL-LIFE-MareNatura/101113792), co-funded by the European Climate, Infrastructure and Environment Executive Agency (CINEA).

The position focuses on the analysis of long-term passive acoustic data from autonomous fixed recorders and from short-term hydrophone deployments. The work includes extraction of underwater noise metrics, detection of cetacean and other marine fauna sounds, and characterization of the underwater soundscape. Analysis of concurrent acoustic and video data will also be needed.

The selected candidate will offer services at University facilities in person and will also conduct field work as needed. The envisaged starting date is mid-March to early-April 2026. The contract duration is 12 months with possibility of extension according to project needs.

The researcher will contribute to the following work packages:

• WP1 Project management and coordination.
• WP2 Identification of marine biodiversity hot spots.
• WP3 Development of a decision support tool.

Specific deliverables:

• D1.5 Progress Report.
• D2.3 Marine Biodiversity Hotspots inventory.
• D2.4 Preliminary proposal for marine areas to be included in the Natura 2000 network.
• D3.1 Conservation plans.

Requirements

• Bachelor's Degree and Master's Degree or equivalent in Biological Sciences, Environmental Sciences, or Marine Technology.
• 1–4 years of research experience.
• Experience in underwater passive acoustics and/or marine bioacoustics.
• Experience in passive acoustics software tools such as PAMGuard and/or Raven.
• Ability to handle acoustic data processing involving MATLAB code.
• Ability to handle long-term acoustic datasets and adhere to good data management practices.
• Good English knowledge.
• Ability to work closely and collaboratively with other team members.
• Ability to multi-task, prioritize and meet deadlines.
• Excellent problem-solving, verbal and written communication skills.
• Ability to work independently and in groups.

Location

Mytilene (Lesvos), Greece.

Salary

Hourly rate: €18–28/hour (depending on experience and qualifications, including tax and social security). Allocated budget: €18,022.
