Pembrokeshire Coastal Forum has launched the Marine Futures: South Wales Internship Programme, offering a unique opportunity to gain skills, knowledge and on-the-job experience across a variety of sectors in the marine environment. The internship is funded by The Crown Estate and runs in partnership with Pembrokeshire Coastal Forum (host), Natural Resources Wales and Offshore Renewable Energy Catapult. Two intern positions are available.
The 2026 internship programme will be based around the Marine Energy Test Area (META) with a focus on the application of technical knowledge, community engagement and ocean literacy by enhancing the data available for the test sites. The role is a mixture of working from Pembrokeshire Coastal Forum in Pembroke Dock, fieldwork across the South Wales coast and some travel to London and across the country, in addition to some optional homeworking.
The successful interns will follow a varied schedule that will allow them to gain a range of skills and experiences. The two interns will also get the chance to undertake a joint research project looking into a practical topic of relevance to all partner organisations. The contract duration is 6 months, from 15 June to 11 December 2026. Interns will be expected to commit to the full length of the programme.
An understanding of Welsh culture, heritage, language and identity is essential for the South Wales application.
Special Features of the Role:
- Undertake a joint independent research project for the partner organisations.
- Communicate the outcomes and recommendations from the research project through a written report and oral presentation for all partner organisations and relevant stakeholders.
- Gain a greater understanding of careers relating to the marine sector.
- Improve knowledge of renewable energy developments and the environmental, social and economic considerations associated with these.
- Gain a thorough understanding of environmental issues facing UK coasts and seas, especially in relation to the Celtic Sea.
- Gain scientific survey and GIS experience alongside the partner organisations.
- Gain an understanding of casework with Natural Resources Wales.
- Deliver marine awareness and educational outreach alongside Pembrokeshire Coastal Forum.
- Assist Pembrokeshire Coastal Forum with key community engagement projects for the Marine Energy Test Area and with PCF's Marine Energy Engagement Project.
- Gain greater insight into the management of a marine energy test centre and the wider marine energy sector.
Additional Activities:
- Stakeholder engagement, creating educational outreach materials, ecological fieldwork.
- Delivering media interviews and presentations.
- Understanding health and safety at work.
- Participating in online meetings, training, conferences and webinars.
- Writing for different audiences and use of social media in the workplace.
- Working with local communities to raise awareness about environmental issues.
Terms and Conditions:
- Hours: 35 hours per week (paid hourly for 7 hours a day, 5 days per week), normally 9:00 am to 5:00 pm Monday to Friday; some out-of-hours work may be required with time off in lieu.
- Holidays: 28 days per annum, including public holidays.
- Pension contribution of 10%.
- Travel reimbursement from place of work for programme-related activities; all travel and accommodation for London trips covered by The Crown Estate.
- Interns may be expected to arrange and pay for their own accommodation and travel for the duration of the internship.
Requirements
Essential:
- A degree, apprenticeship or relevant experience in the marine or environmental sector.
- Demonstrable knowledge of and an interest in current marine conservation, renewable energy, climate change and/or sustainable fisheries issues.
- Knowledge and understanding of marine resources and sea users.
- Excellent communication skills (written and verbal), with an ability to build strong working relationships and to engage with people at all levels.
- Excellent organisational skills with an ability to identify priorities and manage variable workloads, whilst maintaining high level of accuracy and attention to detail.
- Highly self-motivated with drive and determination to succeed.
- A keen interest and passion for the UK's marine environment.
- Willingness to work outdoors on a range of sites in all weathers.
- Understanding of Welsh culture, heritage, language and identity.
Desirable:
- Experience of working or volunteering in the environmental sector.
- Experience in use of GIS and data analysis digital tools.
- Experience of event organisation and delivery.
- Experience of using media communications to represent an organisation and/or scientific communication.
- Experience conducting independent desk-based research.
- Full driving licence and use of own vehicle.
- Knowledge of UK marine species and habitats.

Salary
£13.45 (15.52€) per hour (Real Living Wage) plus 10% pension contribution.
