Job Description

Job title

PhD in Marine Technology – Response Estimation and Wave Prediction for Offshore Wind Farm Installation and Operations.

Company

Department of Marine Technology, Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU).

Description of the job

The Department of Marine Technology at NTNU offers a 3-year PhD position focused on response estimation based on remote distributed sensing of the wave field in an offshore wind park, in combination with metocean forecasting data.

Cost- and risk-optimal installation and operation of offshore wind farms depend on accurate forecasts and predictions of environmental conditions and response of vessel and auxiliary systems. Improved sea-state and wave prediction can lead to real-time solutions for prediction of motion responses and wave loads during installation tasks such as turbine/blade installation as well as mooring and cable installation. The research task will further investigate exploitation of such methods for active motion reduction based on feedforward wave motion/load compensation in DP and crane/winch associated control systems for critical operations by floating vessels, as well as use in online DSS solutions for tactical planning.

This PhD project is part of FME NorthWind (Norwegian Research Centre on Wind Energy), which aims to bring forward outstanding research and innovation to facilitate the sustainable development of wind power. The centre is led by SINTEF, with research partners NTNU, University of Oslo, NINA and NGI, involving more than 40 national and international industrial partners.

The supervisor will be Associate Professor Marit Kvittem. The employment period is 3 years. The position is conditional on external funding from the Norwegian Research Council.

This position is restricted by acts relating to Control of the Export of Strategic Goods, Services and Technology. Candidates from countries subject to export restrictions or listed in threat assessments from national security authorities will normally not be eligible.
