Despite its success, future growth and production are constrained by the inefficient use of very small seed mussels (“spat”). Our previous research has shown that deploying larger spat can substantially reduce on-farm losses and significantly improve production efficiency. We are seeking three PhD candidates to join a collaborative research programme aimed at overcoming these bottlenecks and transforming the way mussels are farmed in New Zealand. Two PhD projects will focus on developing and optimizing husbandry practices for commercial mussel nursery systems, working closely with industry partners. The College of Veterinary Medicine invites applications for a full-time assistant/associate/full professor position (tenure track) to develop an exceptional research program and contribute to the aquatic animal health program, which includes a state-of-the-art aquatic research facility located in the veterinary college. Candidates having a D.V.M. degree or equivalent and/or PhD training and practical experience will be considered. The successful applicant will be expected to build and maintain an active research program in fish health, and candidates working on infectious diseases of fish will be preferred. Other desirable qualities of the successful candidate include an interest in sustainable aquaculture production, climate change, population health, and aquatic invertebrates.
